Alignment. Attachment and Packaging Systems for Fiber-Optical Components

The AA-Modal and LW4000S are former products of Newport Corporation which were taken over by ficonTEC in Q2/2006. These systems are used in various stages of the fiber optic packaging process. Both systems run with the proven INTEGRA™ Control Software which ensures fast alignment routines, full motion control of up to 16 axis, advanced motion vision, full integration of peripheral equipment such as welding lasers, power meters, laser drivers, dispenser systems, etc.

LW4000S

The LW4000S laser welding system is used for fiber pigtailing and in-package welding applications. The system is designed for both 2-beam, horizontal configuration, and 3-beam, vertical configuration welding. The system can handle coaxial LD or PD modules, 2 and 3-port passive devices, butterfly and DIP packages. For the 3-beam configuration, the Beam Angle of Separation (BAS) is fixed at 120°, and the Beam Angle of Incidence (BAI) at 45° (standard). The 2-beam configuration comes with a fixed BAI of 25° and BAS of 180°.
The standard LW4000S comes complete with ficonTEC’s exclusive AccuView Welding Beam Output Housing. This unique design includes an integral CCD camera and a high-precision optical train that compensates for the focal planes of visible (viewing) and IR (welding) wave lengths. The result is an exceptional image quality and true "what-you-see-is-what-you-weld" performance.

AA-Modal

The AutoAlign-MODAL is a modular system for the alignment, assembly and metrology of fiber optic components such as planar waveguides, AWGs and fiber collimators.
The AutoAlign-MODAL can be adapted to increasingly complex assembly and metrology demands as well as growing volume needs by adding easily configurable accessories.
The basic configuration consists of an automated alignment engine, state-of-the-art motion control cards, stages, a power meter and a PC. The system can be reconfigured and upgraded to cope with additional needs.
Exceptionally stable mechanisms are the key to maintaining precise alignment, which in turn allows reliable measurements. The thermal stability of the positioning system is particularly important during epoxy curing, when positional alignment must be carefully maintained over a period of several minutes. The AutoAlign- MODAL has been specially designed to provide superior thermal and mechanical stability through a combination of compact size, choice of appropriate materials, motor/bearing system design and control electronics.
The extensive capabilities offered by the AutoAlign-MODAL are innovatively packaged so that the system is very compact. The basic alignment engine can be contained on a 18 x 18 inch breadboard and upgraded with a vibration-damped platform, glue dispensing unit, UV curing system, computer vision etc.
