Optical Circuit Switching and the AI Era

Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) has emerged as a key technology enabling the next leap in data center performance and efficiency — particularly as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) workloads drive exponential increases in data movement between compute clusters. A core differentiator of these systems is ficonTEC’s Active Alignment technology, applied during one of the key laser welding processes. This capability enables the precise, in‑situ alignment and assembly of multiple critical subcomponents within each OCS module, ensuring optimal optical coupling and mechanical integrity. Through automated feedback loops and highprecision metrology, every module is aligned and bonded within sub-micron tolerances.

The systems incorporate fully integrated metrology for inline quality assurance, guaranteeing stable alignment, traceability, and consistent production quality. This approach enables the reliable manufacture of optical switching modules with unmatched low coupling losses, setting a benchmark for efficiency and performance.

Market Demand & Capacity Expansion

Demand from the industry and hyperscaler clients continues to accelerate.
