Torsten holds a Diploma for Applied Laser Technologies from the University of Applied Sciences in Emden, Germany in 1998. During further work at the Institute of Laser Technology in Emden and University of Loughborough, UK, he built a fully automatic laser lithography system for rapid generation of microstructures in submicron dimensions. He also developed a process to generate the world’s first in-glass diffractive optics using ion exchange processes in gradient refractive index glass, and which is still used today for the generation of waveguides in glass.
Torsten is Chief Executive Officer of ficonTEC Service and one of the co-founders of the company. When founding the company in 2001, the goal was to provide automatic and semi-automatic assembly and test solutions for the photonics industry.
CFO – ficonTEC Service GmbH, Achim, Germany
While Matthias orginally hoped to become a professional skier, several injuries in his younger years eventually forced him to realize that he had to look for a new challenge. He started with an apprenticeship in retail sales for a sports equipment supplier, but as a qualified ski instructor, Matthias was also able to work as an instructor in parallel to this, as well as to his scholastic and university education.
From there, he progressed on to, and finally graduated from the Bundeshandelksakademie für Berufstätige – a form of further education Business School for those already employed – and then cemented his initial financial education with a Degree in Business Economics through joint studies at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria, and at the PFH Private University of Applied Sciences in Göttingen, Germany.
Between completing his degree in 1997 and before co-founding ficonTEC Service GmbH together with Torsten in 2001, Matthias worked as a financial controller for Siemens Thailand, being based in Bangkok.
Matthias is Chief Financial Officer at ficonTEC and actively involved in the on-going financial growth and organizational expansion of the company.
CCO – ficonTEC Service GmbH, Achim, Germany
Elfriede’s working career began in 1981 with the completion of the qualification as a Chef, this in parallel with her responsibilities as a single mother to her 4-year old daughter. After several years of successful employment, she then pursued and gained a second qualification (Bachelor, with distinction) in Business Economics with a Major in Controlling at the HWP Hamburg. In 1994 Elfriede assumed her first commercial, financial responsibilities for a food wholesaler, for which she also established Controlling.
Following the birth of her third daughter in 1999, and with a view to the inter-compatibility of both career and family commitments, Elfriede founded her own company with the goal of providing financial support services to start-ups. Towards the end of 2013 she took on an accounting role within ficonTEC’s financial accounting department. Elfriede’s responsibilities grew accordingly with the rapid growth of the company, and at the end of 2014 she became Head of Finance | Controlling.
One of the particular challenges of the rapidly growing organization at that point encompassed the implementation of an ERP system, which Elfriede has accompanied from the start. Since 2017 Elfriede is on the Board as CCO and is an authorized signatory for ficonTEC. Today, her focus lies with the on-going development of Controlling.
Corporate Vice President – ficonTEC Service GmbH
Stefano has a PhD in Physics from the University of Parma, Italy. After various regional and international managerial roles in Sales & Marketing within Italy in his early career, starting around 2002 Stefano was elevated to directorship roles within Sales & Marketing at NI, based in Austin, TX/USA. From there he progressed to Director – Science & Big Physics, where he was responsible in particular for profitably developing their offering and support for key international scientific R&D and so-called Big Physics (USDoE, CERN, ESRF, ITER, ELI and others). Since 2012 Stefano has been Vice President of (in order) Scientific Research, Automotive & Energy Initiatives, and Automotive at NI, logging various strategic developments and financial achievements across an international customer base. Before moving to ficonTEC, Stefano helped successfully guide the expansion of Eldor Corporation SpA (an Italian-based and diversified automotive manufacturer) into the USA.
Stefano started at ficonTEC as Corporate Vice President in Q3 2019 and is charged with preparing ficonTEC (operative, strategy) for the next growth phase.
COO – ficonTEC Service GmbH
Hartwig started his career with a degree in Physical Engineering from the University of Essen, Germany. After a short spell working as a Process Engineer for (formerly Siemens) Infineon, Hartwig then led the production team at Aifotec AG, a micro-assembly systems manufacturer, until 2002, before moving to LIMO GmbH, a micro-laser and micro-optical systems manufacturer located close to Dortmund. At LIMO, Hartwig was successively in charge of laser production & engineering, of lasers & optical systems’ operations, and more recently, between 2008 and 2015, directly answered to VP Operations, with responsibilities for system production, planning and engineering, warehouse and shipping. In mid-2015 he moved to TE Connectivity Sensors Germany, progressing to Senior Site & Operation Manager, and being responsible for operations development at the Dortmund and Nürnberg sites, while at the same time coordinating customer requirements for a sister site in Romania.
Since the end of 2019, Hartwig has been Director of Operations at ficonTEC, bringing with him around 20 years of extensive learning and expertise in the fields of both lasers & optoelectronics and operative production optimization. Among other recent organizational developments at ficonTEC, since June 2020 Hartwig is now Chief Operating Officer, where he will oversee the growth of operations to match the overall goals for the company.
Principal – Photonics Testing – ficonTEC Service GmbH
Ignazio has a B.Sc. in Nuclear Engineering (Milan, Italy, 1975) and a M.Sc. degree in Digital Systems and Instrumentation (Polytechnic of Central London, UK, 1987). Before joining the machine vision industry in the early ‘90’s, he had spent many years working for the European Commission within the Euratom Program, designing control and data acquisition systems for large-scale thermonuclear fusion experimental projects, including a long spell at the JET Joint Undertaking (Culham Labs, UK).
Before relocating to Germany, he directed ImagingLab Srl, in Lodi, Italy, an engineering/consulting company specializing in machine vision and advanced robotics. He also held the position of Business Development Manager Europe for imaging and motion at NI, based in Austin, TX/USA, from 1999 to 2003. During this time, he also served two 3-year mandates as a member of the Board of Directors of EMVA (European Machine Vision Association). After subsequently heading up the Photonic Device Assembly Business Unit at PI miCos GmbH (Physik Instrumente Group), in August 2015 Ignazio then took up the position of Director of Business Development at ficonTEC.
From April 2020 Ignazio is leading the development of the Photonics Testing for VCSELs and PICs platform at ficonTEC. He is additionally Co-founder and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Photonics 42, a European start-up based in Milan and focused on the photonics technology edge.
Global Director Sales, Service & Marketing – ficonTEC Service GmbH, Achim, Germany
Augusto’s path to ficonTEC started with a graduate degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’, Italy. Following several years of R&D experience within Italian industry, in 1993 he completed a PhD in AI/NN before subsequently joining NI’s Sales department. During his tenure at NI he covered several roles within Sales, Sales Management and Business Development, all with customer engagement related activities. He additionally oversaw the European scientific research and later the energy segments, and also acted as business and technology advisor on several large end-user engagements, primarily in the aerospace & defense industry.
Following his time with NI, Augusto more recently (2018) completed an Executive MBA at LIUC Università Cattaneo, and subsequently (2019) took a role as EMEIA Sales Director at United Electronic Industries, with responsibilities of maintaining double-digit growth, establishing a strong EU footprint EU, and expanding the EU team.
Effective January 2021 Augusto Mandelli has been appointed as Global Director Sales, Service and Marketing. He has responsibility for creating a harmonized sales, service and marketing motion via establishment of a unified customer engagement structure and supporting the sustained growth inherent within ficonTEC’s overall business model.
Dr. Thomas Danger
Director of Sales, Indirect Channel – ficonTEC Service GmbH, Achim, Germany
Thomas studied Physics and has a Diploma Degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg in the field of solid-state lasers. Before joining ficonTEC, he worked for many years in international sales in the fields of laser systems and optical machines, including more than ten years in Sales Division Management.
Thomas joined ficonTEC in July 2016, contributing to the impressive company growth. From January 2021, Thomas will manage and develop the international partner/distributor network. Thomas’ technical competency and technical sales experience will drive partners’ results as well as the recruitment of new qualified partners able to satisfy the demands of ficonTEC customers.
Dr. Moritz Seyfried
Manager R&D – ficonTEC Service GmbH, Achim, Germany
Moritz holds a Master’s degree from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK, a diploma degree from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, as well as a Ph.D. from Bremen University, Germany, all in the field of semiconductor optics. He has spent most of the last ten years working in the field of organic and inorganic semiconductor optics, ranging from basic research of light-matter interaction phenomenon to photonics product assembly.
Moritz joined ficonTEC Service in 2012 and since 2014 is the Manager of the ficonTEC R&D center, located within ficonTEC HQ in Achim, Germany.
CEO & President – ficonTEC (USA) Corporation, San Clemente, CA, USA
Soon has an MBA from the University of California at Irvine (UCI), a Ph.D./MSEE in Quantum Electronics, and a BS in Physics from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He has worked in the photonics/opto-electronics industry for over 27 years, which he combines with a unique combination of technical expertise and business management experience in the field. His experience ranges from working for a Fortune 1000 company to a mid-sized public company, as well as for start-ups at various stages as a key engineer, co-founder, executive, and ‘intra-preneur’. Soon has led various fiber-optics industry standardization committees, and co-developed various device technology programs with major universities and related renowned research institutions.
Soon Jang is responsible for ficonTEC’s North America business operations, including Sales & Marketing and Business Development.
General Manager – ficonTEC Service GmbH (Shanghai) Co., Limited, Shanghai, PR China
Alex holds a Master’s Degree in IT and has more than 10 years of experience in the semiconductor conductor (IC testing and burn-in) and also more than 10 years of experience in photonics automation systems and components, especially for telecom, datacom and HPDL. He initially started working with ficonTEC in 2003, responsible for the first of ficonTEC’s customers in China in 2004.
Since properly joining as General Manager of ficonTEC China, located in Shanghai, China, Alex has been responsible for Sales & Marketing of ficonTEC’s products and the growth of ficonTEC within China.
Operational Manager – ficonTEC Eesti OÜ, Tallinn, Estonia
Jüri graduated with a Diploma in Engineering from Tallinn Technical University, Tallinn, Estonia, in 1984. Following this he worked within the telecommunications industry for many years in management and production roles in different countries around the world. From 1999 he worked for Telecom Operator Elisa and T2, as Director of Network and Member of the Board, where his main responsibilities were GSM/UMTS/4G radio network operations and development of the Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania markets. Before joining ficonTEC, he worked from 2012 until 2016 as Executive Director for JOT Estonia Ltd., a Finnish company representation in Tallinn, Estonia.
Jüri took the role of ficonTEC Eesti Operational Manager in Tallinn, Estonia, in 2017.
General Manager – ficonTEC Service (Thailand) Limited, Pathum Thani Province, Thailand
Kitisak holds a BE in Electronic Engineering and has more than 10 years of experience in electronics manufacturing. He joined ficonTEC in 2013 and was responsible for the first of ficonTEC’s customers in Thailand, and since then he has been responsible for Service and Support of ficonTEC’s products and the growth of ficonTEC within Thailand.
Kitisak is the General Manager of ficonTEC Service (Thailand) Limited, located in Pathum Thani Province, Thailand.
